Millions of motorists queuing up to buy their petrol and diesel will have looked on with envy as Autogas users reaped the double benefit of the cost-efficient, environmentally friendly fuel.

With the row over runaway petrol prices heating tempers throughout the Autumn, the coolest motorists were those who have already made the switch to LPG, the only practical alternative fuel currently available to the public. At about 40p per litre, LPG or Autogas is about half the price of it's competitors.

Furious freight hauliers and farmers blockaded oil refineries and jammed motorways in protest at the Governments apparent unwillingness to compromise on the revenue generated for public spending by the high tax on conventional fuels. The gas-powered motorists, in contrast, can look forward to an increasing price advantage over petrol as the Government honours it's commitment to promote environmentally-friendly fuel alternatives.

With the Prime Minister vigorously defending Government policy, a change of heart on fuel duty seems unlikely. More and more motorists, unable or unwilling to do without their cars, will now be looking for LPG as the future, and while initial interest may be driven by the financial advantages, the potential converts will also appreciate the benefits of the cleaner burning fuel with it's reduced harmful emissions. The latter advantage may become increasingly important as future legislation threatens to limit city centre access to heavily-polluting vehicles, while further concessions for environmentally friendly cars include a reduction in Vehicle Excise Duty and the expansion of the powershift funding programme for purchase and conversion of LPG vehicles.

The end of 2000 sees the strongest ever indications that the fuel supply companies are backing the move to LPG, with nearly 600 public access refueling points now opening at the rate of one new station every day. The car manufacturers, too, are showing that they respect the public's wish for cleaner vehicles with Autogas models now available direct from Vauxhall, Volvo, Ford, Citroen and others. Conversion specialists, under the control of the LP Gas Association's Approval Scheme, now have the experience and equipment for quick, efficient remanufacturing of almost any vehicle.
